Keys To Getting The Law Enforcement Job You Want

These days, when uncertain economic times are putting many careers in doubt, an increasing number of people are looking to work in law enforcement. And there are very good reasons for this.

As many industries have shrunk, North American communities have steadily increased their budgets for law enforcement. Police officers now enjoy better pay and often outstanding benefits.

Even more important, being a police officer gives you an opportunity to improve life in your community in very direct and concrete ways. Police work can be challenging and even dangerous at times, yet few occupations are as rewarding.

With the many positive benefits to working in law enforcement, a growing supply of qualified people are now vying for every opening. I've seen cases where 500 people are applying for every one job opening. It's now increasingly rare for anyone to merely "walk" into a police job.

You must not only pass, but do well on the Police Entrance Exam. This is an aptitude test much like exams other industries require applicants to take. Your score on the test will usually determine your chances of getting the job. Score well, and you may be hired immediately. A lower score will probably mean you have to wait, maybe even taking the exam again.

Most people wind up doing poorly on the test because they assume since it's an aptitude test, you can't prepare for it. But just like studying for the SAT or ACT college entrance exams, successful law enforcement applicants use "score boosting" strategies to get high marks on the police exam.

You can actually study the questions typically used on police exams, so you will already know the answers to most of the questions on the test. There are also simple strategies for doing well on the physical exam most police departments require. You can also learn how to answer questions wisely in job interviews, and learn about the pitfalls that doom most applicants.

Police work could be exactly what you should be doing. Don't let the entrance requirements and competition keep you from achieving your dream of being a police offer. Preparing for and doing well on the Police Entrance Exams will greatly improve your chances of speedy success.

Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy

Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy
Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying than anything else. --Tom Keogh

Customer Review: Jane Fonda Should Have Been Punished, If Not For Treason, For Starring In "Barbarella"

"Barbarella" is extremely degrading to women. It begins with the title character (played by a very young Jane Fonda) performing a strip tease during the credits. Barbarella is extremely silly and ignorant. She can't fix anything when it is broken and is always becoming trapped in a dangerous predicament. A man is always having to rescue her. Unable to say "No," she rewards them with sexual favors. Is this the type of heroine we want our daughters of this age, or any age, to emulate?

Tasteless and sleazy, "Barbarella" is that part of the sixties I wish to forget. The plot is silly and ridiculous and the settings, though beautiful, are unrealistic.

As a fan of horror, my favorite scene is when Barbarella is tied up by strange children consisting of multiple sets of twins. They release dolls with razor-sharp teeth that attack and bite her legs.

The only redeemable character in "Barbarella" is the blind angel, Pygar, wonderfully played by John Phillp Law. He had some interesting lines such as "An angel has no memory." and "An angel doesn't make love, an angel is love. I bought "Barbarella because it starred John Philip Law who was also in Mario Bava's "Danger: Diabolik." Both were filmed simultaneously and released in 1968. "Danger: Diabolik" is far more superior, of course, than "Barbarella." Also, I am a big fan of Dario Argento. David Hemmings who starred in Argento's "Deep Red" (one of the best Italian giallos ever made) had a special guest appearance in "Barbarella." Unfortunately, his character, Dildano, like most others in the movie, is extremely silly and forgettable.

On a bright side, the music is whimsical, lyrical, and contagious. I sometimes find myself humming one of its tunes. That is why I am giving the movie two stars in lieu of only one.

Customer Review: Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy

Jane Fonda's transition from innocence to experience---a documentary of the anti-culture doing its thing. It is Fonda showing daddy and the Hollywood establishment that she is a big girl and will take pleasure where she finds it. As Queen of the Galaxy, she does just that. Durand-Durand is the actor who played Friar Lawrence in Romeo and Juliet. He tries to kill Barbarella with ecstasy only to have his machine shorted out by this insatiable woman. I saw Barbarella at a drive-in. I was drunk and had to watch it again years later. It was directed by Roger Vadim. Fonda and Vadim married and had a daughter.

The Paper Chase

The Paper Chase
Expecting only the basic pressures of attending Harvard Law School, a serious, hard-working student (Timothy Bottoms) finds himself the fearful adversary of the school's most imperious, sarcastic professor (John Houseman). Their relationship grows even more complex when the boy discovers that the girl he's in love with is the professor's daughter (Lindsay Wagner). Edward Herrmann and James Naughton co-star in this moving, intelligent drama.

Customer Review: Unbox problem! ???

I couldn't stop and restart, or fast forward, or drag the slider ahead with this Unbox version. Other Unbox movies/TV shows on my PC were okay doing this. It would hang and I would need to drag the slider to the beginning. Pretty much the same with using Windows Media Player (which Unbox is based on) to play directly.

Did you know the Unbox people can reach out and delete your files, rename them, and presumably retrieve copies of logs?

Customer Review: its really about chasing little pieces of paper not the professors

You overachievers- chasing papers that will instantiate you. Its an endless cycle but they dont mean anything. Thats what this film is about. Not professors, not kingsfield, not the love interest and not even harvard. Marriage papers, diplomas, grades are all meaningless papers that when you know you can have them, and know how to achieve them, suddenly dont mean anything. One of the best films ever

Conversations With God

Conversations With God
Based on Neale Donald Walsch's best-selling, acclaimed trilogy comes a film you won't want to miss! Starring Henry Czerny and Frances Fishers, Conversations with God is an entertaining yet practical exploration of perhaps the most spiritual experience a person can have, regardless of their faith. See why everyone is talking about this exciting, empowering film!

Customer Review: Awesome!

I thought Coversations With God was amazing! It is such an inspirational movie that brought me to tears many times. So heartfelt and sad at times, but also Neale Dimaond Walschs relentless pursuit for life was again inspiring. It has impacted me drastically and made me think differently about life and my unwavering faith with God.

Customer Review: Is this for real?

There are a lot of people looking for hope and 'Conversations With God' seems to offer the hope that God is right there, ready to help and enlighten the one who is willing to take the time to listen to the still small voice.

Spirituality - The Law of Attraction and Success

Everything is spirit. Everything! It is all energy and consciousness.

What does the Law of Attraction have to do with this? How does success come about by becoming aware of the Law of Attraction and its principles?

The Law of Attraction can be compared to the Laws of Gravity and Motion. The Law of Attraction says "You attract situations according to the vibrations that you give out" (Well it says so much more, but this is the gist).

Your actions are an indication of your consciousness and shows you where you are and what you are creating by bringing back consequences to you. The Law of Attraction is very fair and does not discriminate. It does not look at your actions. It only goes by your vibrations. Since you are energy beings, you are constantly giving out signals to the Universe which then attract situations.

The Law of Attraction responds to the essence of your thoughts. There are two types of thoughts-

1. Thoughts that come in uninvited,

2. Thoughts that you deliberately think up.

Have you had these songs that just play in your mind, or certain ideas that go on and on in your mind? These thoughts denote energy imprints that are a part of your mental energy field and play around and get processed by your brain. They indicate what your current state of mind is.

Then there is a deliberate thinking process over which you have control. Most of the tools in the Law of Attraction depend upon deliberate positive thinking processes like affirmations and visualizing which then replace the old negative unconscious thoughts that have been a part of your energy for awhile and have blocked you from progress.

The mind energy is constantly veering between dark and light, negative and positive, past and future, poverty and abundance, and creates so much push and pull for people that it becomes difficult to focus with clear intentions and manifest dreams. The nature of the mind is such that it is constantly stuck in the dualities of life.

Which is why people look towards Gurus, Masters, teachers, advisers and coaches who have already trained their minds to work like finely tuned and sharpened instruments. Not only do these people have complete faith in themselves, they are also capable of holding that faith for the people that they work with, enabling them to arrive at a state of confidence arising from an undivided consciousness. Which is why people who go on a spiritual path also have great success at life's different areas. Knowledge, faith and belief enable them to remain constant and keep their minds together and focussed.

Whenever you have succeeded in life it has been because of an undivided consciousness.
People who have mastered themselves, have a state of undivided consciousness. And with this undivided consciousness, they create.

And success follows. There is no self-doubt and negative messages playing in their mind, which reduce the power of their intentions. All of their mental energy is completely aligned with their intentions, and the lack of self-doubt comes from a training of the mind and an understanding of their Divine nature.

The Law of Attraction then does its job and brings in success. It has no choice.

s long as a secondhand car is sold with a written and specific warranty, it qualifies under the California Lemon Law. The car should not have been purchased for commercial purposes. As with all other applications for vehicles, the California Used Car Lemon Law only covers a secondhand car that was purchased for personal, family or household use.

Care should be taken to have the defects and inherent problems of the car established by a certified mechanic at the time of purchase. If the vehicle was bought without a warranty that covers these defects, the buyer will have a very difficult time making a case under the California Used Car Lemon Law. Unscrupulous sellers will not shy away from trying to sell a buyer a 'lemon' previously returned for these very defects.

California Used Car Lemon Law also applies to leased vehicles, as long as they have been leased under warranty. With all vehicles, such a warranty is not invalid once 18,000 miles of road use or 18 months since purchase have expired, if the warranty specifies a higher mileage or period.

As long as the first repair attempt took place within the specified warranty period, a leased or purchased vehicle can qualify under the California Used Car Lemon Law even after that period.

Basically, one can get a refund or complete, satisfactory repair for a secondhand purchased or leased vehicle as easily as one can for a brand-new car, as long as the used car was purchased for private, non-commercial use. Secondhand cars are not the only vehicles covered by the California Used Car Lemon Law. It applies equally to recreational vehicles (RVs), motor homes of all kinds, motorcyclesFree Reprint Articles, boats and other vehicles.

Floating Life (Widescreen)

Floating Life (Widescreen)
FLOATING LIFE is a poignant and funny film from internationall acclaimed director Clara Law ("Autumn Moon", "Temptation of a Monk") and producer Bridget Ikin ("An Angel at My Table", "Crush"). Dramatic, moving, and at times very humorous, FLOATING LIFE chronicles the emotional journey of a Chinese family cut adrift from its roots after moving from the East to the West. Shot on location in breathtaking Sydney, Hong Kong, and Germany, FLOATING LIFE is one of the most critically lauded films of the year. Featuring dynamic performances from an extraordinary ensemble Chinese/Australian cast, FLOATING LIFE is a powerful and delightful portrait of the age old adage that sometimes, you must lose your way to find out whre you belong.

Golden Voyage of Sinbad

Golden Voyage of Sinbad
John Phillip Law stars as the legendary sailor this time around as he finds a talisman and sets sail with his crew for an uncharted island. With a beautiful slave girl (Caroline Munro) in tow, Sinbad takes on the evil sorcerer Koura (Tom Baker), who wants Sinbad's golden talisman to complete a spell. En route to the island, Koura brings the ship's figurehead to life to wreak havoc on the ship and crew. Once there, Sinbad and crew must do battle with a six-armed figure of Kali brandishing a sword in each hand, as well as an enraged Cyclops centaur and a winged griffin, and also deal with the treacherous Koura.

This 1974 entry in the Sinbad franchise is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the film's production values are quite good, and of course the Ray Harryhausen effects are as beautiful as ever. The set design (especially for the scenes inside the cavern) is striking and inventive, and there's Miklós Rózsa's score gracing the soundtrack. On the other hand, the story definitely tends to drag a bit, and Law's indeterminate accent often wavers toward a weird Slavic inflection. Pointing to the film's age, Law and company often tend to look like poncey rock stars with their long hair, beards, and harem pants. That's all nitpicking, though; the action segments, though they're fewer and farther between than in other Sinbad films, redeem the movie with Harryhausen's incredible artistry. It's worth owning just to see the fluid, complex movements of the animated Kali flailing away at six men with her swords. And of course, scream queen Caroline Munro never looked better as the slave girl Margiana. This is rich, well-crafted fantasy fare that the entire family can enjoy. --Jerry Renshaw

Customer Review: False widescreen as usual

Just a quick note to anyone who sees this: as usual, these are not the true widescreen presentations. If you watch the full screen presentation and pick any scene with good border definitons, and then find the same scene in the widescreen version, you'll notice the edges have been edited over with black to create a widescreen appearance. In other words, instead of viewing MORE visual borders of these movies, the widescreen print is actually presenting much LESS than what was filmed. Stick with the fullscreen viewings so you don't miss anything.

Customer Review: Great adventure...cool movie..

Parents,if you can't find anything for you and the kids to watch because of either being too violent or bad language, then why not this movie and the others that Ray Harryhausen did?? It has cool looking creatures and lots of action. It doesn't always have to be the newest releases, does it?? Show them movies you grew up on or your parents grew up on,so what are you waiting for??

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
If you spliced Charles Addams, Dr. Suess, Charles Dickens, Edward Gorey, and Roald Dahl into a Tim Burton-esque landscape, you'd surely come up with something like Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Many critics (in mostly mixed reviews) wondered why Burton didn't direct this comically morbid adaptation of the first three books in the popular series by Daniel Handler (aka "Lemony Snicket," played here by Jude Law and seen only in silhouette) instead of TV and Casper veteran Brad Silberling, but there's still plenty to recommend the playfully bleak scenario, in which three resourceful orphans thwart their wicked, maliciously greedy relative Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), who subjects them to... well, a series of unfortunate events. Along the way they encounter a herpetologist uncle (Billy Connolly), an anxious aunt (Meryl Streep) who's afraid of everything, and a variety of fantastical hazards and mysterious clues, some of which remain unresolved. Given endless wonders of art direction, costume design and cinematography, Silberling's direction is surprisingly uninspired (in other words, the books are better), but when you add a throwaway cameo by Dustin Hoffman, Law's amusing narration, and Carrey's over-the-top antics, the first Lemony movie suggests a promising franchise in the making. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Review: ITS AN OK MOVIE

I watched it once and now its collecting dust. Although it is a good movie, I could have waited for it to play on cable. I would have been just a happy.

Customer Review: ***** ... But WHERE is the SOUNDTRACK???

I saw the film before starting to read the books, yes, and i am a beleiver in CHANGING what needs to be changed to make books into films.

Loved this entire film.

BUT - and this is a big but - where on earth can one get the score\soundtrack??? The music is easily (for me) THE finest part of the entire production!

I have searched for a complete or even partial soundtrack release - to no avail!

I have found the music in some unusual places - OTHER FILMS' SCORES!! Is THAT why the score is tied up in limbo? I want this music! I don't recall now which films availed themselves of bits of the score, but they were just being shrewd with a brilliant work of music!

I have been known to put on the DVD and skip to the end credits and crank up the sound.

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride DVD features a MUSIC-ONLY TRACK. Why isn't there one on this 2-disc set???

Ocean's Eleven (Widescreen Edition)

Ocean's Eleven (Widescreen Edition)
Ocean's Eleven improves on 1960's Rat Pack original with supernova casting, a slickly updated plot, and Steven Soderbergh's graceful touch behind the camera. Soderbergh reportedly relished the opportunity "to make a movie that has no desire except to give pleasure from beginning to end," and he succeeds on those terms, blessed by the casting of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, the title role originated by Frank Sinatra. Fresh out of jail, Ocean masterminds a plot to steal $163 million from the seemingly impervious vault of Las Vegas's Bellagio casino, not just for the money but to win his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) back from the casino's ruthless owner (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh doesn't scrimp on the caper's comically intricate strategy, but he finds greater joy in assembling a stellar team (including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Carl Reiner) and indulging their strengths as actors. The result is a film that's as smooth as a silk suit and just as stylish. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Review: There is just something about this movie that doesn't work...

I will admit that the casting here is delicious (that applies, right?) and so my appetite was wet and my interest was peaked long before sitting in the theater. George Clooney, at the time, was one of my favorite actors (he's suffered from overexposure for me; 2005 did it for me) and you can't deny the charm and appeal of actors like Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and the undeniably brilliant Julia Roberts. Add to the mix funnyman Bernie Mac as well as brilliant actors like Andy Garcia and Don Cheadle, not to mention a slew of young actors like Casey Affleck (who would have ever thought he'd rise from this to become `Robert Ford'), Topher Grace and James Caan's son Scott and you have yourself guaranteed success; right?

I would think you, so sadly there is just something about this movie that doesn't work. I think the main issue is that when all is said and done `Ocean's Eleven' is just not that memorable. Sure, the cast is great and everyone does a superb job. Sure, the plot is decent and the dialog and funny, but in the end it all just kind of rests there, never `popping' so-to-speak. I just expected to be wowed and I truly wasn't.

It was kind of dull.

The plot revolves around Danny Ocean, recently released from prison, who bands together with his ten partners in crime to knock off three successful Las Vegas casinos. Sure, the money is a huge bonus, but the real reason for the caper is to win back Ocean's ex-wife Tess who is now attached to the owner of these casinos, Terry Benedict. Benedict is not only money hungry but he's ruthless and thus it makes the job all the more difficult for Ocean and his crew.

Director Steven Soderbergh is good at extracting wonderful performances from his cast (just look at the effortlessness that permeated the sets of `Traffic' and `Erin Brockovich') and here is no different. George Clooney is his charming, natural self (I much prefer this side of him to his over praised dramatic work) and Brad Pitt is actually quite funny. Julia Roberts is really the heart and soul of this film though. From the minute she walks on the screen the film turns on its head. But even she can't save it from mediocrity. The film as a whole just doesn't do anything special, it doesn't become anything memorable. In the end it is nothing more than a decent buddy flick with some laughs. It's not a movie you can really enjoy multiple times, which is sad to say since the cast alone should have guaranteed the films longevity.

I have yet to see the two sequels, yet I hear this is the best of the three so it's not a good sign. A lot of people enjoyed this movie, but it appears after reading many of the reviews that they feel as I do. Sure, this film has its moments and it is in no way shape or form a bad movie. It is fun and it is enjoyable, but when it's over you won't be aching to watch it again.

Customer Review: Fun not serious

It isn't a great work of art but a lot of fun to watch when you just want to relax and be entertained.

Rhode Island Divorce Law - Frequently Asked Questions

1) How long does it take to get a divorce in Rhode Island?

If all issues concerning divorce, child support, equitable division of assets, alimony, visitation and other issues are resolved between the parties, the earliest possible date for a nominal divorce in Rhode Island(a nominal divorce is a non-contested divorce in which everything is agreed to) is approximately sixty five to seventy days after the plaintiff files a complaint for divorce. Article written by David Slepkow (401-437-1100) If the matter is set down as uncontested, then an automatic court date, "the Nominal Divorce Hearing", will be set by the clerk approximately sixty five to seventy days after filing.

In the event that one party does not want to go forward on that seventy day nominal divorce hearing date or if all issues are not resolved between the parties, then the case will not go forward on the nominal date and will be set for additional conferences and potentially the discovery process. The case may eventually culminate with a trial. Contested divorces typically resolve in 6 - 10 months.

The divorce cannot become finalized until, at a minimum, ninety days after the parties attend the nominal court hearing. In the event that the parties do not go to court and resolve the matter at the nominal court date, then the divorce could take up to one year or potentially more.

2) What does no fault divorce mean in Rhode Island?

It is not necessary to prove fault grounds in order to obtain an absolute divorce. All you need to do is prove irreconcilable differences in order to get a divorce. In other words, if either party wants to terminate the marriage, then that party can get a divorce so long as the other jurisdictional requirements in Rhode Island are met.

"No fault divorce" does not mean that fault is not significant. If a party can prove that the other party is at fault for the break up of the marriage, then they can seek a disproportionate share of the marital assets. Fault can also be a factor to determine whether or not a party is entitled to alimony. The following types of behavior could be grounds to obtain more than fifty percent of the marital assets: alcoholism, drug addiction, domestic violence, extramarital affairs (cheating), abusive behavior, gambling, emotional abuse, abandonment, etc.

3) What is the residency requirement to obtain a Rhode Island divorce?

In order to file for divorce in Rhode Island you need to have been a domiciled inhabitant and resident of Rhode Island for one year prior to your filing of the complaint for divorce. If you have not been a domiciled inhabitant and resident of Rhode Island for one year prior to filing your complaint for divorce, you can file based on your husband's /wife's residency in Rhode Island for one year prior to the filing. It does not matter if you change your residency or move out of town the next day so long as you were a resident on the date of filing and for one year prior!

There are exceptions for people stationed in the military who maintain a residency in Rhode Island. Even if you move the day after filing, you still meet the residency requirements in Rhode Island. If you do not qualify to file for divorce in Rhode Island you should look for an attorney in other states that you might qualify to file a divorce. If you live in Rhode Island but dont meet the residency requirements to file for divorce, there are other types of actions such as a complaint for separate maintenance without filing for divorce that you may be able to file which would allow you to deal with issues concerning proeperty rights and child custody and support issues.

3a) How do I prove my residency at the nominal divorce hearing in order to obtain a Rhode Island divorce.

-It is sufficient, if both parties appear at the nominal court date and testify that at least one of the parties was a domiciled inhabitant and resident of Rhode Island for one year prior to the filing of the complaint for divorce. The Family Court will typically waive the requirement for additional witness if both husband and wife attend the nominal court date and testify that at least one party had the requisite residency.

-If only one party attends the nominal court date then you need one of the following in order to obtain a divorce in Rhode Island (a) two additional witnesses in court to testify to the one year residency of the Plaintiff (b) one witness in court to testify to the one year residency of the Plaintiff and an affidavit from a different witness attesting to the person's residency. 4) In Rhode Island, does it make a difference who files the divorce first?

It should make no difference which spouse files the divorce when the Family Court determines equitable division of the assets, child support, visitation, child custody, alimony, etc. However, in the event that a no contact order, restraining order or emergency motion is needed or filed, which party files first can be extremely significant! This is especially true if there is an emergency motion concerning child custody and/or child visitation concerning a child.

Spirituals in Concert

Spirituals in Concert
Customer Review: Magnificent

One of the finest CD's Ive ever listened to, even better when you have someone as magificent as Jessye Norman and of course Kathleen Battle. Two tremendous stars that shine bright in anyones life.

Customer Review: I wish I had seen the concert

Put two operatic sopranos together for a concert of spirituals, and what do you expect? So much emphasis on artistry, that the almost sacredness of the spiritual is lost? Not so in this case! Both Norman and Battle have maintained the depth of feeling this genre is meant to portray.

Put two operatic sopranos together for a concert, and what do you expect? Two voices so similar that time drags in a seemingly endless monotony? Not so in this case! The contrast between Norman's sheer power and Battle's lyricism and vocal flexibility keeps the listener on audio tiptoe. And there is the obvious rapport with their audience, so vividly noted in the crowd's response throughout "Scandalize My Name."

I can understand the concerns of some previous reviewers, that this is not what we might call a "standard" approach to spirituals. However, my collection includes several recordings of spirituals, from the simplicity of Marion Anderson, to the folksiness of Harry Belafonte, to "Spirituals for Strings," and the chorales of Fred Waring and Robert Shaw. Each of these approaches elicits a new depth of the feeling expressed in this musical form.

"Spirituals in Concert" is a welcome and worthy addition to what I already owned.

Paul McCartney: Ecce Cor Meum

Paul McCartney: Ecce Cor Meum
Paul McCartney's new "classical" oratorio is called Ecce Cor Meum, which translates as "Behold My Heart." The idealistic texts, also by McCartney, are meditations on goodness, spirituality, peace, and love, and are well served by the pretty, Romantic melodies; the long choral and orchestral sections flow one into the next. The Interlude (composed after the death of his wife, Linda), with its lovely oboe solo, is simple and moving. The music builds throughout to an emotional climax and the entrance of the organ later in the work--beautifully played and handsomely recorded--is quite remarkable. This is a far more advanced work than 1991's Liverpool Oratorio: better orchestrated, more through-composed. No, it's not the last word in compositional sophistication, but it has many beautiful moments, and McCartney's legions of fans will need to own it. --Robert Levine

Customer Review: Paul McCartney: Ecce Cor Meum

Paul is a natural. I love his music. This Classical piece is I think his best, it brought tears to my eyes.

Customer Review: Paul McCartney: Ecce Cor Meum

A different Paul! We love this music, very classical yet modern. Beautiful singing.

Gattaca

Gattaca
Confidently conceived and brilliantly executed, Gattaca had a somewhat low profile release in 1997, but audiences and critics hailed the film's originality. It's since been recognized as one of the most intelligent science fiction films of the 1990s. Writer-director Andrew Niccol, the talented New Zealander who also wrote the acclaimed Jim Carrey vehicle The Truman Show, depicts a near-future society in which one's personal and professional destiny is determined by one's genes. In this society, "Valids" (genetically engineered) qualify for positions at prestigious corporations, such as Gattaca, which grooms its most qualified employees for space exploration. "In-Valids" (naturally born), such as the film's protagonist, Vincent (Ethan Hawke), are deemed genetically flawed and subsequently fated to low-level occupations in a genetically caste society. With the help of a disabled "Valid" (Jude Law), Vincent subverts his society's social and biological barriers to pursue his dream of space travel; any random mistake--and an ongoing murder investigation at Gattaca--could reveal his plot. Part thriller, part futuristic drama and cautionary tale, Gattaca establishes its social structure so convincingly that the entire scenario is chillingly believable. With Uma Thurman as the woman who loves Vincent and identifies with his struggle, Gattaca is both stylish and smart, while Jude Law's performance lends the film a note of tragic and heartfelt humanity. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Review: Collector piece

This movie is a post modern classic. Wonderfully filmed, with a great story. It is not science fiction, though it might sort of fit the genre. It is more along the lines of Farenheit 451, a Clock Work Orange, and 1984.

Customer Review: Great way to get discussion going in class

I bought this movie to show my class of lower level bio kids, generally kids who are checked out of school. Some of the details had to be reviewed that they didn't quite understand, but they understood the movie overall. Even better, the discussion we had after the movie was AMAZING. They really were able to relate the movie well to modern issues and many were able to uncover the layers of symbolism and imagery in the film. There were more than a few comments that caused me to respond "I hadn't even thought about that!" This was a much better vehicle for thinking about ethical issues realted to technology than any article I could have found. We are also relating parts of the movie to our new unit on genetics, something I hadn't even anticipated would happen. Overall, I would highly recommend this film for other bio teachers to use during their DNA units.

Sylvester (1985)

Sylvester (1985)
Cinderella is a cowgirl in Sylvester, a hard-luck story with a happy ending if there ever was one. Melissa Gilbert is the tough-talking teenage orphan cowpoke whose natural talent and determination transform her into a prize-winning equestrian. Soapy subplots abound: She has a drunken reluctant mentor (Richard Farnsworth, in a fine turn), fights the court to raise her two younger brothers in a rundown trailer, and protests too much against a would-be sweetheart (Michael Schoeffling, the resident hunk of Sixteen Candles). Yet there is poetry in the scenes of Gilbert riding Sylvester through the hills and magical footage of Farnsworth secretly training the horse by moonlight. Even the trite dialogue ("Did you kill their dreams like you're killing mine?") fails to do in the modern fairy tale. It's a pretty darn imperfect world Gilbert and friends inhabit, which in its own plodding way makes it seem like real life, despite the unlikely journey from jeans to jodhpurs. --Valerie J. Nelson

Customer Review: Great Family Movie

I was looking for a family movie for all to watch. This one certainly did the job. We all enjoyed it. If your looking for a movie for the family to watch together or enjoy family movies yourself, this is a good choice.

Customer Review: Sylvester

I bought the movie for a friend for Christmas because Sylvester is my all-time favorite horse movie, it's the best horse movie out there. My friend seems to enjoy it as much as me if not more. It is a fantastic movie about Three-Day Eventing, and it is the best horse movie I've ever seen.

What to Do When North Carolina Lemon Law Doesn’t Apply

Wed, 03 Sep 2008 10:20:04 -0700
When it comes to applicable lemon law, North Carolina only protects consumers with new vehicle purchases. However, there are things you can do to protect yourself as a consumer when buying a used automobile. Car buyers need to know their rights, especially when buying a used car. Buying a second or third hand vehicle can save you a ton of money, but ultimately, it’s just not worth it if you get stuck with a lemon. When lemon law (NC or any other state) isn’t applicable, the phrase “buyer beware

Never get put on the spot when buying a car.

I have been seeing  more and more posts about on the spot delivery’s recently.  This tactic is nothing new and  I have seen it practiced for at least 15 of the 19 years I worked at GM dealerships.  I even got to see it happen to my father first hand.  The Lemon Law Blog www.lemonlaw.com has a few good detailed posts about this topic.  They usually have lots of great info on the latest scams. I’m not positive but I read an article that said they were the lawyers that actually set up GM’s lemon
